I imagine a lot of developers are wondering what to do about the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator that will be released in 2020. PMDG seems to have enthusiastically embraced it, as part of a statement on the "product trajectory alignment". Perhaps surprisingly, they are also ending support for X-Plane while less surprising is that they are ending support for 32 bit sims. I have witnessed a few more developers following this path and indeed a question in the recent Navigraph Flightsim Survey asks if you will hold off making purchases and wait to see what Microsoft will produce? Just Flight are currently conducting a similar survey and offer the chance to win a prize for your thoughts - more details below.

Every previous version of MS Flight Sim has pushed the recommended hardware spec’ beyond most peoples reach at the time of release and it wouldn't come as a complete surprise to hear you'll need to upgrade your hardware to run MSFS20 to see results similar to what Microsoft are showing in their trailers. I expect most people will have those sliders ‘to the left’ even after a hardware upgrade.
The word on the street is that MSFS20 has a legacy mode allowing older software to work - just how much backwards compatibility there will be has not been confirmed, if indeed any at all. It’s logical to assume the more up-to date software would have the best chance of working but aircraft have been discussed as well as airport sceneries.

It’s a hard life...
If you don't keep your ear to the ground regarding the latest hardware then you may be surprised to hear that AMD is, and has been for awhile, threatening to knock Intel off their perch. Intel are only just holding onto the Gaming Crown by their fingertips but many expect it to be on AMD’s head next year. On that note the latest chips do have eye-watering price-tags! Going for a slightly slower chip would be my recommendation - unless your loaded, in which case please contact me! Check out Linus’ video review below.

In the graphics card arena nVidia have been producing ray-tracing cards which for the most part have been white elephants - virtually no games use ray-tracing to date. MSFS20 certainly does use ray-tracing and I predict that those simmers seduced by the visuals in the new sim (like me) will find it a necessity to update. The RTX2070 is currently king although rumours exist of another card which may beat this - in a year from now we'll have a much clearer picture (pun intended)! The good news is I have found a few videos which will run the numbers for you below. As a rule nVidia cards are faster than AMD’s RX series but not by much and certainly not better by value.

I can exclusively announce a new industry award - the UKDirect SnowBalls award which this year goes to FS2screw - sorry FS2Crew - for continually shafting their customers - i.e. me! For example: I bought the FS2Crew add-on for the PMDG737 in June 2014 at the full price of 34.97.
Not 2 years later I was invited to buy the FS2Crew: PMDG 737 NGX Reboot - for which they generously gave me a 5 Euro discount.to buy the same software (29 Euro’s). Still at least I get unlimited access - just kidding! You can download it 20 times max, including your initial download, and every update/patch they release counts. I suppose if you need it after that you could always buy it again :(
Earlier this year PMDG updated their PMDG 737 NGX Reboot to be 64-bit compatible. Sensing an opportunity FS2Crew: PMDG 737 NGX Reboot Captain's Set (P3D 64 Bit) was released - at full price minus 5 Euro's for being a loyal customer mug. Another 31.47 EUR left my bank account for the same sound files.
Since then PMDG have rebuilt their 737 to version 3 with improved cockpit model, upgraded textures, PBR materials, improved models (flight and external), re-recorded sounds and updated avionics with a guarantee to refund the full price from the 737 they promise to release in MFSF2020 - so I bought it.
Now if I want to continue using the same FSCrew sound files with the updated PMDG 737 it will set me back another EUR 19.95 but only as long as I don't hesitate and succumb within 3 weeks of release or else it's back to full price again, which now is 39.95 Euro's Ka-ching.
If I had shelled out for it again I would have paid about 106 Euro’s over 5 years for the same sound files - thats more than I paid for the sim!
Will the story end there? Will the ghost of Christmas Past visit FS2Crew? You can bet your firstborns life  next year we will see an MSFS20 version, and FS2Crew will want more! About another 40 Euro’s? - No Tiny ‘FS2Crew’ Tim! -  you can not have more, this gravy train has dried up. I'm happy to support developers but there's a line and it was crossed so far away I need a 737 to get to it!!

The Economics That Made Boeing Build the 737 Max [12:37]

Dubai air show
Emirates said the airline was still in talks with Boeing about buying more aircraft from the US manufacturer.
Sheikh Ahmed said talks were continuing with Boeing at the Dubai air show, with everything up for discussion, including when the US aerospace giant might resolve issues around its 737 Max, currently grounded after two crashes.

Emirates has previously said it could buy 40 of Boeing's 787 Dreamliners, but has yet to firm up the order.

US regulators call for updates to Boeing 737NG planes

737-engine

US regulators have called on Boeing to redesign the engine covering on its 737 NG planes after a fatal 2018 accident, in which a woman died after being nearly sucked out of a window.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) also said that existing planes should be updated with the changes. The recommendations came at the end of the board's investigation of the deadly Southwest Airlines incident. Boeing said it was making enhancements.

The death of Jennifer Riordan of New Mexico, a 43-year-old Wells Fargo vice president and mother of two, in April 2018 was the first on a US passenger airline since 2009. She was killed after an engine exploded and shattered a plane window.

In its final report on the accident, the safety board said that a fan blade in the engine was cracked due to "fatigue". It punctured its case, creating fragments that crashed into the window. The incident, which caused injuries in eight other passengers and led to an emergency landing in Philadelphia, followed an earlier engine fan issue - known as a "fan blade out" event on a Southwest 737-700 flight.

NTSB chair Robert Sumwalt said the refit of the fan cowl structure could be expensive but was necessary to improve safety in the event of a fan blade issue.
"These recommendations show the way toward greater safety even when a fan blade out event occurs," said NTSB chair Robert Sumwalt.

Boeing has delivered about 7,000 737 NG planes to customers. It is an earlier generation of planes than the Boeing Max series, which has been grounded after deadly crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia. The safety board did not call for 737 NG planes to be grounded. Airlines are now inspecting fan blades on a more regular basis, it added. Engine manufacturer CFM International is a transatlantic joint venture between General Electric Co and France's Safran SA.

Boeing suspends production of 737 Max model

Boeing is temporarily halting production of its grounded 737 Max after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would not approve the plane’s return to service before 2020.
The decision came after the US planemaker’s board held a regular two-day meeting in Chicago.
“Safely returning the 737 Max to service is our top priority,” Boeing said in a statement. “We know that the process of approving the 737 Max’s return to service, and of determining appropriate training requirements, must be extraordinarily thorough and robust, to ensure that our regulators, customers, and the flying public have confidence in the 737 Max updates.”
Boeing as yet has no timeframe for restarting production but plans to redeploy its 12,000-strong Renton workforce.  FAA administrator Steve Dickson  said he would not clear the plane to fly before 2020 and disclosed the agency had an ongoing investigation into 737 production issues in Renton, Washington.
Dickson said there were nearly a dozen milestones that must be completed before the Max returns to service. Approval is not likely until at least February and could be delayed until March, US officials told Reuters last week.

Qantas retires its Boeing 747 fleet

It's flown 13 hours a day for close to 20 years and travelled so far, it's essentially gone around the world 2,000 times. But today, one of the last Qantas 747s made its final flight in the flying kangaroo colours, retiring to make way for a more modern fleet.

PARIS AIRSHOW 2019 | Airbus Recap  [4:25]

Dubai Airshow: Airbus has won $30bn (£23bn) worth of orders for 170 aircraft in another sign of the continued expansion of Middle East airlines.
On the second day of the Dubai Air Show, Emirates announced the purchase of 50 Airbus A350-900 XWBs - extra wide body - planes at a list price of $16bn. That was closely followed by fast-growing low-cost carrier Air Arabia ordering 170 Airbus A320s worth $14bn. Both airlines are likely to get a discount on the catalogue price, given the size of the orders.

Air Arabia chief executive Adel Ali told reporters the aircraft order was a "game-changer" for the airline. He said it would allow Air Arabia to expand in southeast Asia and Africa. Meanwhile, Emirates said its order, announced at a hastily-convened news conference after last-minute negotiations, will be used to help re-shape its fleet as the airline adjusts to a slowing regional market and the early end to production of the A380.
Emirates is the biggest operator of the A380, with more than 100 of the aircraft in its fleet.

The airline's chairman and chief executive, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said the A350s would allow Emirates to expand its long-haul network. The first of the A350 aircraft, which flies up to 15 hours and carries 350 passengers, will be delivered in 2023.

"It is very good news for Airbus," the European aerospace giant's chief executive, Guillaume Faury, told the news conference. He added that there would be no reversal of the decision earlier this year to end production of the A380.

KNUFFINGEN AIRPORT Worlds Biggest Miniature Airport MINIATUR WUNDERLAND HAMBURG [FULL HD] [31:40]

The 150 sqm large airport, located in the middle of the Alps, is a big technical challenge. Since May 2004, already, the technology is being developed to find a solution for a realistic simulation of takeoffs and landings. The Airport has been opened in May 2011. Besides the simulation for takeoff and landing, there is a large advanced Carsystem which moves not only vehicles, but also airplanes. The Airport is the largest model airport and is technically as groundbreaking as the Carsystem.

Freeware Scandinavian Scenery

If you're interested in flying somewhere a bit different to the usual holiday hotspots this Christmas there's some very nice freeware scenery packages of Norway for FSX through to P3Dv1-4 available here: flightsimnorway.com. These sceneries include photo scenery and autogen, independent  AI Ship traffic and are regularly updated and there are links to other websites of interest for Scandinavian fliers and despite their name they also have a lot of good scenery for Sweden. Bear in mind even if you don't own any Orbx products you can still use their freeware airports - many of which are in Norway. It would be remiss of me not to mention the Finnish sceneries http://files.fsnordic.net/Flight_Simulator/Scenery/Finland/ by Tatu Kantomaa too.

The flights created by Graham are still available and many more departure and destinations have been added. As Graham says “Any A319/320/321, B734,737,738,739,752,753 or even the E170,175,190,195 are capable of making the 1300 mile trip with good planning”.

There are usually on-line events to Lapland and they are well supported by the community so have a look for any advertised. There is a nasty rumour going around that UKD may even have a noobie fly-in or two so if your interested let me know.
Just keep your eyes peeled for a Jolly fatman in a red suit when airborne as I heard Rob Wright may be back!

Seasons Bleetings, Graham UKD140.

What happened to the British aircraft industry? [14.39]

Considering the UK was at the forefront of aviation, the fall and rise of the British aircraft and defence industry is one of the lesser-known subjects even to us Britians who often see the fall of manufacturing as just one way, though the British government has sometimes made things much worse than they could have been.
In this video, we look at the collapse of UK aircraft production and the missed opportunities together with the future possibilities now.

But I was there to visit, learn and talk about the famous Vulcan which served as high altitude, strategic bomber during the Cold War and the Falkland War.
We’ll be looking at why England needed this plane in the first place and its famous mission during the Falkland War.

Orbx TrueEarth Great Britain for P3Dv4 – South V2, Central and North Due Soon

Orbx released TrueEarth Great Britain on Prepar3D V4 back in February. At the time, users reported that performance wasn’t quite up to the standard that was expected. Orbx then confirmed that a V2 was in the works to change that and also offer a more complete experience. Announced on the forums, Version 2 of TrueEarth Great Britain South will soon be released along with Central and North.

Orbx has confirmed that a significant amount of work has gone into this new version, which has focused heavily on improving performance for users. “New techniques have been discovered to improve the autogen, along with giving users the choice to use the simulator’s settings to adjust scenery density depending on their personal system,” said Ed on the forums. These updates for the new version of TrueEarth GB South will also be carried to Central and North when all three are released.

The new version of South will be released as a free update for existing customers. It’s worth noting that Orbx’s TrueEarth Great Britain South is currently on sale via the Orbx End of Year Sale, so now is a good time to pick up a copy in anticipation for the new free update.

Orbx Releases Alderney Airport

Orbx has released the long awaited Alderney Airport (EGJA) for FSX and Prepar3D. This new version of the airport includes a new and updated airport terminal, and features high resolution and hand-painted textures.

The Orbx team has done their best to port the original Earth Simulations product over to FSX and Prepar3D, but unfortunately some features are missing due to the inefficiency of the original 3D models and their original implementation. Furthermore, Orbx warns for some potentially missing features, due to the source files not being organised and some of them even missing. The team also had to use different imagery due to some licensing issues, but the imagery should still be sufficient.

To compensate for all these issues, Orbx is releasing Alderney airport for just $14.95AUD. On top of that, the product is now available in the currently on-going end of year sale with an additional 50% discount.

Orbx Issues Statement on openLC Product Development

Orbx’s John Venema has taken to the Orbx forums to issue a statement on the development status for their long-running series of openLC products. This article covers both the long-awaited openLC Africa and also openLC Asia.

John started the forum thread by saying that development for openLC Africa has been ongoing for over 2 years. Ever since openLC South America was released, the development of Africa has been on and off, with the intention of releasing the product at the end of 2017 / early 2018. The delays were attributed by changes in priorities for the developer, which turned out to be TrueEarth Netherlands for AFS2/P3D, research and development on Orbx Global for X-Plane and also porting TrueEarth GB South to P3D. Whilst various screenshots has been shared over time, the Orbx team have yet to receive the beta code from the developer. John added, “For that reason, I have hidden that preview topic for now as I do not want to give anyone the impression that a release is any closer than it is. We are working with the developer to ensure we do receive a beta for OLC Africa.”

Unfortunately, the news doesn’t end there. John also mentioned that the other openLC pack focusing on the Asian region, “may never see the light of day.”

Whilst John is disappointed at the news, he did go on to add that there are many reasons as to why software development roadmaps forcibly change from time to time. Elements such as market conditions, business priorities and other reasons are why things sometimes don’t always work out as hoped. Technologies also change and advance during development, which can also cause delays and hinder projects. However, in spite of this, it was also added that “Orbx has a solid track record for delivering most of what we announce in our roadmaps […].”

Whilst the news may not be the best, John concluded the forum thread by stating that if the team can make any progress with openLC Africa, then they intend to test and ship it as soon as possible. Should there be any news, the team will inform the community.
