Flight simulation is entering interesting times - X-Plane 11 is due soon, Dovetail Games FSX spin-off is also expected soon and then there is the Virtual Reality revolution which looks like it will finally be available at a price affordable by the masses. As if that wasn't enough the wait is over for the next edition of Directions to endure! Ta-daa.

X-Plane 11 is expected to be released in the next month and if you buy X-Plane 10 now from the Laminar Research website you will get a free upgrade to the next version on the day of the release. Instead of describing all the features of the new sim I will refer you to the video further down the page of a seminar filmed at the recent FlightSim convention held at RAF Cosford. In anticipation of this annual event we sent our man-in-the-street, roving reporter Phil 101 on a no-expenses paid field trip. Phil kindly summed up his experience of the day and took a few photos - You can read his report in this newsletter.

Back at UKDirect you can expect to see some changes taking place on the website with a bit of a make-over. The forum has still got some outstanding glitches I have yet to fix but it's working again and you can use it to leave your impressions, extra poop-bags will be provided!
What else is there? Bleed air - you’ve heard of it but do you know what it is, where it comes from and what it's used for? Angle-of-Attack produce a range of videos that teach you all you need to know about how planes work and you can watch half of one here for free. There are a few other inspirational and educational videos to watch too. Being a fan of Star Trek I couldn't resist including a film featuring William Shatner but at least it does have an aviation theme and as it's Halloween tonight the ghosts are appropriate!

As usual you can catch up on the latest round-up of real world aviation news and as always you'll find the regular features are here - best screenshot, real-world aviation news, fleet updates, competition and humour (hopefully).

FLIGHT SIM 2016 – ROYAL AIRFORCE MUSEUM COSFORD – 08OCT16

The show was held in Hangar One of the RAF Museum in Cosford and, according to Just Flight’s email, promised to be the “best” ever. After a 2.5hr drive from home, I arrived about 1000 thinking it would be just starting up with a few boozy-headed exhibitors from the night before but what a surprise I had! Marshalled into the overflow car park, a long queue at the parking ticket machine and an even longer queue of fellow aviators lining up to enter the show!

This year’s show was sponsored by Just Flight in association with PC Pilot. I had prepaid my £8.35 entry fee and was greeted with a big hello, a bag of Flight Sim related treats and a map of Hangar One and its exhibitors. My goodie bag also consisted of various discount flyers, a free copy of the current PC Pilot magazine, a cute stress-busting squeezy foam Jumbo jet toy and Tracon – Air Traffic Control 2012 game. Amongst the 28 exhibitors booked, Alpine Systems, Trackhat, Aerosoft, PC Pilot, IVAO, Simdesign, RC Simulations, a few flying clubs and many more were all displaying and demonstrating their wares. Unfortunately, Dovetail Games were booked to attend but I didn’t see them anywhere.

The exhibitors were interwoven along a winding path of museum aircraft which often overshadowed the presentations, but that just added to the excitement of the day. Pressing through the throng of Flight Sim enthusiasts I did three laps of all exhibitors’ stands to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Along the way, there were quick opportunities to sit down, grab a yoke and go big bug-eyed on the latest pumped-up PC with triple widescreen cockpit build, complete with thrust controls and an array of glass gauges and switches.

I refrained from loading up with software add-ons at discount show prices and even the guy showing off his RC helicopter and spy camera. But I did come away with a happy feeling that my hobby was still alive and that so many fellow enthusiasts were buzzing with excitement just as I was.

Okay, highlights for me. There were a lot of cockpit builders on display showing the higher and more costly end of the hobby. It was great to see and play but not relevant to my minimal setup of FSX SE, laptop and Saitek sticks. I was more interested in the clubs who turned out with more modest set-ups and a vast knowledge of tuning .cfg files, add-on hits and misses and other great tips.

What should have been a highlight for me was Laminar Research's big announcement and demonstration of X-Plane 11 but I missed it because I was distracted by the fantastic exhibits of the museum itself.  If you’ve never been to RAF Museum Cosford then it is well worth a day out. All conceivable aircraft in pristine preserved condition are displayed in three massive hangars. Entry is free and you just pay for parking (£3 for 4 hours, £4 all day).

Summarising my day at Flight Sim 2016 and RAF Museum Cosford is easily summed up in one word: brilliant! I look forward to next year’s show.

Boeing

The Father of the ‘Queen of the Skies’ Joseph ‘Joe’ Sutter passed away 30th August aged 95. He was the driving force at Boeing in the Sixties and the Chief Engineer creating the iconic 747 which changed air travel forever.

ANA has taken delivery of it’s 50th Dreamliner, they currently operate 36 787-8’s and 14 787-9’s. ANA was the launch customer for the Dreamliner and still have 33 more on order including 3 of the larger 787-10’s.

Airbus

Korean Air’s aerospace division have delivered the first set of Sharklets for the Airbus A330neo. The wing extensions are a development of the smaller A320neo Sharklets and are expected to improve fuel efficiency by 4%. The A330’s wingspan will increase from 60.3m to 64m and are designed to increase lift while reducing drag.

The Airbus US Manufacturing Facility in Alabama delivered it's tenth aircraft in September, an A321 for Spirit airlines. Spirit Airlines operate an all-Airbus fleet but this was it’s first US built Airbus.

BA customers who have booked short-haul flights for next year told they won't receive free food

By Lucinda Borrell, MSE News Reporter
5 Oct 2016

Passengers who have booked certain short-haul flights with British Airways taking off from 11 January next year may want to pack some extra snacks after the airline announced it will no longer be providing complimentary food and drink. If you've booked a BA flight lasting less than five hours that departs from London Heathrow or Gatwick, you'll be expected to pay for in-flight refreshments from 11 January 2017.

BA is in the process of emailing affected travellers to inform them that it's "upgrading" its food offering to a new "buy-onboard menu range" provided by Marks & Spencer.

Ryanair cuts free check-in window to just four days

If you're flying on budget airline Ryanair, from 1 November you'll have to pay a fee if you want to check in more than four days before you fly.
The change means holidaymakers returning to the UK more than four days after their departure – for example, those going away for a week – will need to access the internet while abroad to check in online to avoid paying the charge.

Ryanair passengers can choose between paying for a seat – Ryanair says this costs from £4-£15 per person – or not paying and being randomly allocated seating. The airline says it's shaving three days off the free check-in window because it believes this will "increase the choice available" to customers who opt to pay for reserved seats by giving them a greater time frame in which to choose. The change will apply to all Ryanair passengers, including those who've already booked a flight for after 1 November.

London City Airport is expanding.
The airport currently handles 4.3 million pax per year and has been given government approval for a £344m expansion. £344m gets you a parallel taxiway, seven new aircraft stands and an extension to the pax terminal which anticipates 6.5m future passengers per year.

Twin-Otter Milestone
Viking Air has completed the 100th production Twin Otter 400 Series aircraft. The 400 features upgraded Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34 engines and a digital avionics suite. The 400 series is flown by 34 airlines in 29 countries.

Sweden recommends to limit ATR-72 power ranges following unsolved engine vibrations incidents

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) recommends EASA to limit ATR-72 power ranges in specific conditions following several unsolved engine vibrations incidents.

The SHK published their final report of a serious incident involving a Braathens Regional ATR-72-500 in November 2014. The aircraft operated on a domestic flight from Stockholm-Bromma Airport to Visby in Sweden with 55 persons on board.

The vibrations increased in intensity and the commander reduced the rate of descent to 2,500 feet per minute.
The vibrations became so severe that the cabin crew had difficulties moving in the cabin and that there were difficulties reading the instruments in cockpit.
Information from the flight recorders shows that the left propeller was first feathered momentarily. The right propeller was feathered thereafter, after which the right engine (PW127M) was shut off. The flight continued with the left engine in operation. The information also reveals that the communication between the pilots did not include confirmation of which engine’s power levers were manoeuvred. A number of warning signals were activated during the sequence of events. The signals were not reset during the acute phase of the event.
When the commander moved the right propeller control to feather position, he was unable to push it all the way to fuel shut-off position. The control was therefore returned to the “auto” position and then pushed back via the feather position to fuel shut-off, whereby the vibrations subsided.
The co-pilot explained the situation to the air traffic controller in the Visby tower and declared an emergency situation.
The approach and landing were executed without problems.

The SHK was unable to determine the cause of the serious incident. Since it noted that there had been six similar incidents, a recommendation was issued to EASA to “consider to impose temporary restrictions to the flight envelope or similar limits of the power ranges of the same until the problem is resolved and rectified.”

Avro RJ Freighter?
BAE Systems is considering a programme to convert it’s RJ100 passenger aircraft into a dedicated cargo variant. BAE perceives a gap in the cargo sector between the large turboprop’s 7 tonne capacity and the 737 Classic’s 18 ton capacity. The proposed RJ100 frieghter could carry 14 tonnes of freight up to an extra 1,000nm further range through the use of underfloor fuel tanks with the cargo loaded using a 146QT’s door. Conversion is anticipated to be much cheaper than a 737 conversion and would take 9 months to complete. If demand exists then RJ85’s could also be converted using the same components with potential for combi variants.

An ASL Airlines Hungary Boeing 737-400 cargo plane, operating flight QY7332 on behalf of DHL, suffered a runway excursion accident after landing at Bergamo-Orio Al Serio Airport (BGY), Italy.
The aircraft departed Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, France at 02:54 hours local time with destination Bergamo. The flight was cleared to perform an ILS approach to runway 28. After clearing the flight to land, the tower controller provided the latest weather information (wind 310 degrees at 15 knots) and stated that the runway condition was wet.
About 04:07 hours the flight crossed the runway threshold at 140 feet AGL at a speed of 156 knots. During the flare the aircraft floated for 14 seconds between 30 and 20 feet. The aircraft touched down about 2000 m down the runway.
The runway length starting at the runway 28 threshold is 9209 ft (2807m). Failing to stop at the end of the runway, the aircraft travelled 300 m across two roads, a parking lot and a highway lane before coming to rest with the nose across another highway lane.
The aircraft crossed the airport perimeter fence at a speed of 109 knots.

29 AUG 2016  Mitsubishi MRJ-200 (MRJ-90)   Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation  JA21MJ   C/n: MSN10001  First flight: 27 Aug 2016

The first prototype of Mitsubishi Regional Jet forced to return to Komaki again due to the same problem on the air management system as had happened the day before. The MRJ would be sent to Moses Lake/Grant County International Airport (MWH/KMWH), WA for certification check.
On 30th August, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation announced that the problem was the malfunction on sensors monitoring the air management systems on the port side.

The flight tests of the first test aircraft of the MRJ (Mitsubishi Regional Jet) carried out on August 27 and 28 were aborted when anomalies were detected in the signals generated by sensors monitoring air management systems. Two air management systems, left and right, are installed in the aircraft, and in these events, a malfunction was detected in sensors monitoring the air management systems on the left side.
The air management systems operated properly during the flights, however, considering that the long flights are to the United States, the decision was made to take all possible measures to fly the MRJ in a perfect condition.

1> Which airport is not a European airport? If you need help look at the answers to the last quiz below.

    a)        BIRK
    b)        EGLL
    c)        HECC
    d)        LGAV

2>  With which 2 letters do airport codes in Brazil start?
    a)    BA
    b)    BR
    c)    SA
    d)    SB

3>  Which is not an ICAO code of a national capital's airport?

    a)    LECB
    b)    EHAM
    c)    MMMX
    d)    KIAD

Answers to last Directions quiz:

  1. What does ICAO mean?
    b)        The International Civil Aviation Organisation is a UN specialized agency, established by States in 1944 to ensure that ICAO Member States conform to global norms.
  2. In the ICAO code structure, (e.g. KJFK, EGCC) generally what do the last two letters identify?
    b)    An airport -  ICAO codes are distributed by region and country. In general, the first letter is allocated by continent and represents a country or group of countries within that continent. The second letter generally represents a country within that region, and the remaining two are used to identify each airport. An exception to this rule is larger countries that have single-letter country codes, where the remaining three letters identify the airport.
  3. In the ICAO code structure, what does the second letter usually represent?
    d)     A country (see above). There are a few exceptions to the regional structure of the ICAO code made for political or administrative reasons. For example, the RAF Mount Pleasant air base in the Falkland Islands is assigned the ICAO code EGYP as though it were in the United Kingdom, but a nearby civilian airport such as Port Stanley Airport is assigned SFAL, consistent with South America. When a bomber believed to have crashed in the ocean 17 years ago is found in the Libyan desert, a Colonel [William Shatner] and Major accompany the only surviving member of the crew, who is now a General to figure out what happened. The General claims that he and the other members of the crew bailed out over the Mediterranean but not everything makes sense, and while the Colonel just wants the whole thing closed, the Major insists on finding the truth. And watching them are the ghosts of the crew. Not a bad film really especially if your interested in Mr Shatner’s non-Star Trek career.
